Introduction:
Metis HR, is a leading HR consultancy that specialises in addressing complex workplace issues. This case study details how Metis HR successfully assisted in resolving workplace harassment for an engineering company, after a shift leader’s inappropriate behaviour towards a new employee was brought to their attention. The case highlights the importance of addressing workplace harassment. Acting promptly and professionally.
Background:
Metis HR was contacted by the MD for assistance with a situation that had rapidly escalated. There was a serious workplace concern as shift leader in the company had been engaging in flirtatious behaviour. Additionally, although this behaviour was directed at an employee, it’s important to highlight that the individual had been with the company for less than three months. At first, the flirting was seen as harmless, leading the company to take no immediate action.
Problem Escalation:
As time passed, the shift leader’s advances became increasingly inappropriate. In the unfolding situation, matters took a significant turn when an attempt was made to kiss the new starter within a staff room—an action that was swiftly and resolutely rebuffed by the recent employee. Given the inherent power imbalance, the new starter faced a dilemma regarding whom to confide in about this distressing incident, which underscores the importance of seeking professional guidance.
Critical Incident:
Two weeks later, during a staff meeting, the shift leader made a derogatory ‘joke‘ about the new starter. Humiliating her in front of her colleagues. This matter reached breaking point when on the way out of the meeting. In addition to the humiliation, the shift leader also touched the employees bottom, belittling her. Insisting that she shouldn’t take it so seriously. Overwhelmed with embarrassment and distress, the new starter left the room in floods of tears. A colleague followed her and discovered the extent of the harassment, including the belief that the shift leader was targeting her after she had rejected his advances.
The colleague encouraged the new starter to take action and submit a formal grievance against the shift leader.
Metis HR’s Intervention:
Recognising the seriousness of the situation, the MD engaged Metis HR to conduct a thorough investigation. Our experts took the following steps:
- Metis HR initiated an immediate assessment to gauge the extent of the issue.
